Work it girl - it's time to get a trainer for your pelvic floor. The best thing a mom can do before and after having a baby – well, actually for the rest of a mom’s life – is to work out her pelvic floor muscles. The first step is to get a personal trainer – a physiotherapist who has expertise in the pelvic floor. Hey, ladies, you’d get a trainer for the rest of your body so why wouldn’t you get one for your happy muscles?
Here’s what a pelvic floor physiotherapist can do for you:
- assess your pelvic floor strength
- teach you specific exercises like Kegels to build strength
- help you to isolate your pelvic floor muscles
- treat urinary and anal incontinence
- utilize biofeedback or muscle stimulation
- recommend vaginal weights to build strength
- release muscle tension in your pelvic floor muscles
- treat scar tissue
- suggest behavioral changes (like diet, drinking habits, exercise, etc.)

So, you’ve probably figured out your physiotherapist will need to check you out “down there” to assess your muscle strength. Only after doing this, can your physiotherapist set up a training program tailored just for you.
Get over it!
Ladies, look, if you want to get your pelvic floor back in shape, if you want rocking sex, if you don’t want your pee, poo or one of your organs trailing behind you, then bite the bullet and get your pelvic floor properly assessed. Your pelvic floor is a pretty amazing set of muscles and nerves that deserve the same respect and care as any other part of you body. If you’re lucky enough to have access to a pelvic floor physiotherapist then you really should go for it!
Where have all the pelvic floor physiotherapists gone?
Now, here’s a troubling fact – there aren’t that many pelvic floor physiotherapists out there. So, some moms may find it hard to find a pelvic floor physiotherapist. But don’t let this stop you from seeing a regular physiotherapist who can at least can get you started on some strength-building exercises.
TIP: At the very least, have an orgasm! No kidding. It’s been suggested that spontaneous orgasm is a great way to keep your pelvic floor muscles engaged and in shape. So go crazy – get out the lingerie, put new batteries in the vibrator, ship the little one to the in-laws, do whatever it takes!
