Solutions

Anal incontinence can be helped in various ways:

Strengthen your pelvic floor
Similar to urinary incontinence, building strength in the muscles of the pelvic floor may help your anal incontinence.  Connect with a pelvic floor physiotherapist and start working on your Kegel exercises.

Bowel training
Bowel training helps to re-establish normal bowel movements; for instance your doctor may recommend training your bowel to go to the toilet at a specific time of the day.

Diet modification
The types of food you eat and the amount of water you drink may impact your incontinence.  Your doctor may recommend eating more high fibre foods, drinking more water or eating smaller meals more frequently – it all depends on the type of incontinence you have.  Simply changing your diet a little bit may help improve things.

Medications
Your doctor may recommend taking medications if exercises, diet modification or bowel training have not been effective.

Sacral nerve stimulation
Sounds kind of kinky! This is a procedure that stimulates the nerves that run from your spinal cord to your pelvic floor to help with nerve damage.

Secca procedure
This is a non-invasive procedure that uses radio frequency energy to tighten the tissue in the anal canal – gee, sounds like a facelift for your bum!

Surgery
If the other treatments just haven’t worked, your doctor may recommend surgery to repair the damaged or weakened muscles around the anal sphincter.
